As the months crawl later into the year and we approach autumn and soon winter, some of the crops have been doing great. The squashes we have at the garden are taking over and encroaching on the onions and soon to be the potatoes.
We had a recent Zoom catch up as a group where Audrie from Discoverin' Families had proposed using the site for one of her projects, the Working Parent and Student group. Audrie was looking for an outdoor space large enough to be able to accommodate 5 households, a maximum of 15 people, to be able to come along to an outdoor magic show by a local magician. We as a group agreed it would be great for this fellow project to host an event in our garden, of course adhering to the current government guidelines.
As part of the event, I harvested some of the crops on-site to make donation bags of fresh, organic food for the families to take away so not only did they get to see the garden and visit it, they got to take something away from the garden also.
The Friday event I made up bags of courgettes and onions for the families to take away, along with a recipe, which you can see below and a leaflet if any of them are keen to get involved. See our blog on volunteering with us here.
Above recipe can be found here.
For the Saturday event, we had run out of courgettes, so the families visiting on Saturday were able to take away bags of chard, kale and broccoli, again with a recipe, see below, and a leaflet about getting involved, but also this time we also included a few sheets of information on why the Scottish Government advises community growing is so vital in so many ways (see here on why the Scot Gov suggest community growing is so important.)
Above recipe can be found here. (see how I have altered it slightly to sneak in the broccoli)
It has been great to collaborate in this way with another local group in the North East area of the city and we look forward to working closely with Discoverin' Families again soon. Moving forward, we hope to be able to donate further harvest to the new Food Larder in Fintry Church.
